As you know, Daylight Savings Time ends this Sunday November 2nd. At 2:00 am clocks will fall back one hour.

Please be advised that this will affect the 34-hour restart for drivers who are taking their restart break during that time. Drivers will still need to show two breaks from 1:00 am – 5:00 am on their logs. Even though this will require a 35-hour break, it will eliminate violations of the two 1:00 am – 5:00 am required break criteria for this Sunday and next week.

Driving a commercial vehicle is a physically and mentally challenging job. Long hours, customer demands, and other traffic are a lot to deal with. Driver fatigue is a constant companion to the truck driver. Mental stress; such as financial concerns, issues at home, or medical problems, can all weigh heavily on an already tired person. Please stay aware of your alert status. Drowsiness is an advanced stage of fatigue. When you are tired – STOP – REFRESH! Sleep is involuntary; you can doze of at a moments notice.

All drivers need Space and Visibility to avoid hazards while driving. 8-12 seconds of eye lead time is recommended at all times. If visibility is reduced because of fog, rain, snow, or sleet, make the adjustment and slow down! Chances are good that if you don’t see an obstacle soon enough – you will hit it!

October 17-23, 2010 the CVSA and FMCSA will be promoting commercial driver safety through the Operation Safe Driver campaign. Through enforcement and education of both commercial and non-commercial drivers the CVSA hopes to improve the safety performance of everyone on the road. Look out for increased roadside inspections and enforcement of dangerous traffic violations such as failure to wear seat belts and aggressive driving. Don’t give them a reason to stop you!
