Veterans Day is a day set aside to honor and celebrate the men and women who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. At FirstFleet we are thankful for the sacrifices that so many of our countrymen have made in the name of freedom.

Since the beginning of this great nation our men and women have fought tirelessly for the defense of our freedoms and the liberation of those who are oppressed. The United States flag flies today as a symbol of freedom and hope because these brave individuals answered the call of their country.

As you know, Daylight Savings Time ends this Sunday November 2nd. At 2:00 am clocks will fall back one hour.

Please be advised that this will affect the 34-hour restart for drivers who are taking their restart break during that time. Drivers will still need to show two breaks from 1:00 am – 5:00 am on their logs. Even though this will require a 35-hour break, it will eliminate violations of the two 1:00 am – 5:00 am required break criteria for this Sunday and next week.

FEELING TIRED? Please know your warning signs of fatigue: Yawning, watery or sore eyes, daydreaming, feeling uncomfortable in your seat, and the dangerous head nod. When these warning signs of being tired at the wheel begin to happen to you, pull over, take a power nap, or get out of the truck and refresh yourself. Understand what is happening, you need to get fresh oxygen in your brain. Taking an hour or more nap, puts the body in deep, rim sleep, when you wake up in an hour or so you will still be tired because you didn't get enough deep sleep to make a difference. A power nap of fifteen minutes or so will refresh the brain with new oxygen in the blood, and you will be better prepared to continue your trip.

The fall season brings a change of seasons and also different safety challenges for the professional driver. Schools are open again and school buses are around every corner. Children may be running to catch a bus or not paying attention when getting off a school bus so we need to be doubly careful. Darkness sets in sooner each passing day and visibility is consequently reduced. Beware of cars stopped along the highway, animal movement during night time hours, and the occurrence of other drivers dozing off and being in a hurry also increases.

Each year the American Trucking Association sets aside a week in September to celebrate and honor those that service our country by moving the goods our nation depends upon. There are approximately 3.2 million professional truck drivers in our country and this week we celebrate and honor those who work in this profession.

The Professional Truck Driver of today faces many challenges with changing regulations, equipment specifications, environmental implications and a host of other concerns that require their full attention. The Professional Drivers that travel up and down our highways are a dedicated and hardworking group of men and women who take great pride in doing their jobs well. Their jobs are not easy by any stretch of the imagination, and we recognize that this group of individuals is consistently putting forth the time and energy to service our country well.
